What Do You Consider an Emergency?
When something happens, it is important to know what you should consider a dental emergency. Mouth trauma can be painful and distracting. Often times, these situations require immediate attention.
- Losing a tooth – If one of your permanent teeth falls out or is knocked out, call your dentist right away. Try to find your tooth, but do not touch the root. Gently rinse the tooth and either place it back in the original socket or place the tooth between your cheek and your remaining teeth. Alternately, place the tooth in a glass of milk. Seek dental care immediately.
- Broken/Fractured Tooth – Seek help right away if a tooth fractures or breaks. A broken tooth may have internal damage and will need to be treated immediately. Rinse your mouth with warm water and use an ice pack to reduce swelling while you wait.
- Toothache – Oral pain can be a sign of an underlying health issue. Mouth pain should never be ignored. Pain can be caused by a number of things such as infection, damage, and some oral diseases. Set an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible to avoid the risk of your condition worsening.
If you lose a dental filling, a crown becomes loose or if you fear you may be suffering from an abscessed tooth, please call your dentist right away and set up an appointment.
What Will Happen If I Don’t Come in?
Ignoring oral pain and injuries can lead to potentially serious complications, such as infection or more damage. These complications could become dangerous and may require additional treatments to get your mouth back into shape. This is why it is best to seek dental care immediately, rather than putting it off.
