Types of Dentures
Dentures are removable appliances usually made of acrylic resin or porcelain. They can be complete, partial, conventional or immediate. Complete dentures are recommended if most or all of your teeth are missing. Partial dentures are used to fill spaces left by lost teeth and to prevent your remaining teeth from shifting. Conventional dentures are placed in the mouth about a month after tooth extraction, while immediate dentures are placed right after extraction.
The entire process usually takes about one month (or five appointments) to complete. On your first visit to our Columbus dental office, we will discuss your goals and create a treatment plan. After a comprehensive evaluation, we will make a wax model of your teeth and gums that will be used to create the final denture. Your dentist also determines the proper shape, color and fit. After some minor adjustments, the final denture is placed.
It’s important to care for your new teeth properly. Make sure to show up for regular dental appointments so we can check for signs of decay or disease and help you maintain optimum dental health. As you age, your mouth changes and the bone under your denture may shrink or recede. To maintain proper fit over time, it may be necessary to realign or replace dentures.
If you are worried about the potential cost of dentures, be aware that we offer CareCredit as an option. We never want our patients to have to choose between their oral health and their other responsibilities.
