Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-Supported Dentures

When you lose a tooth, it is best to have it replaced as soon as possible. Ignoring a lost tooth can affect your ability to bite, talk, and chew. Because missing teeth increase the burden on other teeth, you may eventually find yourself suffering from muscle pain and headaches.

Thankfully, advancements in technology have improved the way dentures look, feel and function. At Lifetime Dental Health, we are proud to offer our patients the option of implant-supported dentures.

How Are Implant-Supported Dentures Different?

Traditional dentures rest on the gums and are held in place with bonding glue. Although it is a more affordable option, this can cause bone deterioration over time and can lead to complications.

Implant-supported dentures, on the other hand, are anchored to the mouth by an implanted attachment. This process provides a secure fit and eliminates the need for glue or paste. Some implant-supported dentures can be removed for cleaning, while others are designed to function as permanent teeth.

How Are Supported Dentures Placed?

The first step in the process involves the placement of a dental implant. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically attached directly to the jaw bone. Once an implant has been placed, the wound is given time to heal. This can sometimes take up to six months, depending on your personal dental hygiene habits.

Once the implants are in place, Dr. Barry will use 3D CT scans and digital imaging to create a set of dentures just for you. Once the dentures are ready, they are fitted directly onto the implants. These types of dentures are much more permanent than traditional ones and offer a more natural-feeling, functional tooth replacement.

These implants are typically placed along the lower jaw but may be installed on the upper jaw as well if needed.

What Are the Benefits?

Implant-supported dentures offer a range of benefits over traditional dentures, including:

  •   Stability while eating
  •   Improved dental hygiene
  •   Improved aesthetics
  •   Improved taste and sense of temperature
  •   Improved confidence, and
  •   Bone and gum preservation.

What Type of Denture Is Right for Me?

Traditional dentures are initially more convenient and may be cheaper, however, they can also lead to structural damage and complications. Implant-supported dentures provide a more permanent, comfortable, and functional option to replace lost teeth. These dentures significantly improve stability and prevent jaw bone deterioration. It’s no surprise why so many of our patients are choosing implant-supported dentures over traditional ones!
